Plastic Surgery Term: Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
What is a Tummy Tuck?Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that dramatically reduces the area of the abdomen surrounding the waistline.
A Tummy Tuck will remove excess fat and skin, and tighten the muscles of your abdomen, creating a more flat, contoured waistline. Many surgeons utilize liposuction technology in concert with abdominoplasty to achieve the desired results.
This plastic surgery procedure can take anywhere from 2-5 hours. Most patients are back to work within 3-4 weeks.
In addition, those who undergo a Tummy Tuck procedure usually do so after pregnancy which may leave them with excess skin and unwanted fat, or after they have lost an optimal amount of weight and still have stubborn pockets of excess fat and sagging skin.

Liposuction (Lipoplasty)
Liposuction is an elective surgical procedure where unwanted fat deposits are removed through vaccuum suction. A tube is inserted under the skin, above the muscle, where unwanted fatty deposits rest. The fat is then sucked out from under the skin, leaving the area smooth and flat. There are different techniques that can be used for this plastic surgery procedure, including tumescent technique and the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty.

Who does Liposuction benefit?
There are some important things to keep in mind about Liposuction and its candidates. Most doctors will recommend Liposuction after a person has tried to lose as much weight as possible. The best candidates being both men and women who are not excessively overweight.
People who are in good shape, with firm expandable skin but with stubborn pockets of fat in certain areas, those who are physically healthy and have realistic expectation in reference to plastic surgery are the prime candidates for Liposuction.
Remember Liposuction is not a weight loss solution, it is best used when body contouring problematic areas that don't respond well to diet and exercise.

Liposuction, Recovery and You
You will experience some fluid drainage from the incisions made by your plastic surgeon. In some cases, your plastic surgeon may insert a small drainage tube, to prevent fluid build up. To prevent swelling, it may be recommended for some type of surgical elastic garment.
Before you leave, your plastic surgeon will give you instructions on exactly what you can and can not do. To answer a couple common questions, your plastic surgeon will direct you on how to change your dressings, how to shower, and how to be most comfortable. Your stitches will be removed, or dissolve, usually within 10 days. You should be back to work within a couple days, but still with minor pain and discomfort.
