Breast Implant Exchange

Breast augmentation is a popular life changing procedure with over 300,000 women going under the knife every year. However, many women that undergo breast augmentation will opt for a second procedure down the road for an implant exchange. A change in cup size, swapping the type of implant or removing a ruptured implant are all reasons women may consider breast implant exchange surgery.

There are many reasons women undergo implant exchange procedures. The most common reason for implant exchange is a desire for a different cup size. Women who feel that their implants are “too large” often replace them with newer, smaller implants. More commonly, women feel that the implants they chose in their first breast augmentation procedure are not large enough. In either case, implant exchange is much less invasive as the implant pocket already exists inside the chest.

Breast implants are not a life time device. While some women have the same implants for decades, women often exchange their implants 10 to 15 years after their initial implant surgery. At this time women have the opportunity to change the type of implant. Women with Saline implants may have experience rippling or feel that their saline implants are too firm and would like silicone implants instead. Women with Silicone implants may want the new cohesive silicone implants.

Regardless of the reason for implant exchange, women who are considering breast augmentation should consider implant exchange a necessary part of having breast implants. Most women feel that the small inconvenience and cost of breast implant exchange is a very small price to pay in exchange for the overall benefits of breast implants.
