How does a plastic surgeon become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
To be ABPS board-certified, a physician must meet these rigorous requirements:
- The plastic surgeon must graduate from an accredited school.
- Complete a combination of at least five years of general surgery and plastic surgery residency training.
- They then must pass a comprehensive written examination given by ABPS plastic surgeons.
- They then have to wait a year, if they pass, and then take the oral exams.
- It does not stop there. After receiving there Board Certification, they have to regularly attend medical education courses, and have to adhere to a strict code of ethics.
- All surgeries performed must be done in an accredited surgical facility.
It is a rigorous and extensive process in order for a plastic surgeon to be Board Certified. You can rest assured, knowing that a Board Certified plastic surgeon is dedicated to his or her craft.

Rhinoplasty on My Plastic Surgeon USA
My Plastic Surgeon USA Success Stories are stories of transformation written by actual patients of My Plastic Surgeon USA featured Cosmetic Surgeons. They are more than testimonials - they're windows into the experiences of every day people who've chosen to enhance their beauty and self-confidence through elective Plastic Surgery.
Wendy's story centers around her Rhinoplasty, a surgical procedure performed to alter the shape and/or size of one's nose. It's a personal story that highlights her struggles with self-esteem and self-image, related to the disproportionate size of her nose to the rest of her face. It's a common experience and one that can be painful, but this is an inspiring story of courage and faith.
A Perfect Nose
Around the time I hit puberty, I started to develop a hump on the bridge of my nose. My mom's to thank for this trait as it runs on her side of the family. Anyway, as I aged, the hump became much more pronounced. This heavily affected my self-esteem. I knew that I either had to deal with it or get a "nose job." I didn't want to hide behind my hair all my life so I decided to consider surgery.
About a year ago, I began doing research over the internet for surgeons specializing in rhinoplasty (nose surgery). While researching, I stumbled on My Plastic Surgeon USA. On there I found a couple of board certified surgeons with experience in performing the procedure. Each surgeon had rhinoplasty before and after photos, which I thought was great because it allowed me to get a better idea of what to expect. Of the surgeons I decided to contact Dr. Kim of Beverly Hills, California to setup a consultation. In my opinion, he had the best looking results.
Dr. Kim was very patient with me and answered all my questions. I felt very comfortable and confident speaking to him. After the consultation, I went ahead and booked a surgery date. There was no doubt in my mind that I had made the right decision.
On the day of surgery, Dr. Kim and his staff put me at ease by reassuring me that I was in good hands and that everything would be ok. All I could remember before surgery was closing my eyes any praying to God that I'd wake up to a perfect nose. However, when I woke up all I saw was bandages. LOL. I asked Dr. Kim how it went and he told me the surgery was a success. I was thrilled! Several weeks later the wounding began to heal and I finally got to see what I've always wanted to see, a perfect nose.

Liposuction is an elective surgical procedure where unwanted fat deposits are removed through vaccuum suction. A tube is inserted under the skin, above the muscle, where unwanted fatty deposits rest. The fat is then sucked out from under the skin, leaving the area smooth and flat. There are different techniques that can be used for this plastic surgery procedure, including tumescent technique and the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty.
There are many areas of the body where Liposuction (Lipoplasty) can be used, including:
- abdomen liposuction

Best Way to Find a Plastic Surgeon
On the NKP Medical Forums, a question often asked is, "How do I choose a plastic surgeon?" The answer, of course, is different for different people, but there are some important points to remember which will help you in your search:
1. Insist upon a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. A good place to start for this is at the My Plastic Surgeon USA Surgeon Finder. 3. Look at plastic surgeons' before and after photos and read plastic surgery patient testimonials.
4. If you are having trouble choosing a surgeon, use our Ask a Plastic Surgeon feature and surgeons in your area will respond to your questions!

Hospital or Outpatient Facility: Does it really matter?
Does it really matter where the surgery is performed?
Yes, it does!
The success of any Cosmetic or Plastic Surgery procedure, like any other elective surgical procedure, depends on many factors: the experience and skill of the surgeon, asking the right questions and finding the best outpatient facilities that fit your needs.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that people select a surgeon who has operating privileges at hospitals and outpatient facilities that have been credentialed in plastic surgery procedures. This provides you, the patient, with extra safety measures and makes your entire surgical procedure, much safer and ultimately, more comfortable.
The surgeons featured on My Plastic Surgeon USA usually list their operating privileges for hospitals and especially their outpatient facilities. Many of our surgeons have excellent accredited outpatient facilities for your safety, convenience and comfort.
When you find the surgeon that's right for you, make sure to find out about their facilities.
