'My Beautiful Mommy' Book Targets Kids' Questions

A Bal Harbour, Fla., plastic surgeon has written a book to help children better understand the cosmetic procedures that their parents are considering or about to undergo.

ASPS Member Surgeon Michael Salzhauer, MD, who performs cosmetic procedures such as abdominoplasty, breast augmentation and rhinoplasty, told Newsweek magazine that he wrote My Beautiful Mommy for children age 4-7 because the parent patients often find it difficult to address their plastic surgical procedures with their children.

"Parents generally tend to go into this denial thing" he told the magazine. "They just try to ignore the kids' questions completely."

My Beautiful Mommy follows a young girl and young mother in the days leading up to and following the mother's abdominoplasty, breast implantation and rhinoplasty. The mother explains what she's doing and how it will affect the household afterward, with the child asking age-appropriate questions - and receiving age-appropriate answers - related to the process.

The book was originally scheduled for release on May 11 (Mother's Day). However, due to the publicity associated with the book, the release date was moved up to April 28.
