Face Lift

Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)

The effects of gravity, sun exposure, and the stresses of daily life can take a toll on the appearance of the face. Deep creases form between the nose and mouth; the jawline grows slack and jowls develop; folds and fat deposits appear around the neck.

A face lift (rhytidectomy) at our Miami practice can help improve the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of the face and neck.

At Dr. Salzhauer's Bal Harbour office (serving Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and beyond) face lift surgery is often combined with other procedures such as blepharoplasty and brow lift for a "complete" look. Depending on your needs, younger patients may be candidates for the newer "short-scar" face lift.

Older patients who require more facial suspension are better candidates for a deep plane face lift. In addition, non-surgical face lifts that require no cutting, no hospitalization, no anesthesia and no downtime are becoming more and more popular.

The Method

At our Bal Harbour office, serving residents in and around Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, the method of performing face lift surgery varies greatly from patient to patient. As much as possible, Dr. Salzhauer attempts to customize the procedure to better suit the specific needs of each patient.

In general, the surgery can be performed with local anesthesia - allowing the patient to remain conscious but relaxed and not feeling pain, or with general anesthesia - which puts the patient to sleep for the duration of the procedure, usually an hour or two.

The four main stages of face lift surgery are:

  • Incision
  • Smoothing of the skin
  • Removal of excess tissue
  • Closure of the incisions

The size and location of the incisions can vary from patient to patient, but in general, Dr. Salzhauer will attempt to place them in areas where potential scarring will be least noticeable, such as behind the hairline. The amount and location of tissue removed also varies greatly. Dr. Salzhauer will often trim or suction excess fat from the neck and chin to improve facial contour. Once the proper amount of tissue has been removed, the face lift incisions can be closed.

Face Lift Recovery Period

Most patients return to work 10 to 14 days after the face lift procedure. The length of recovery and amount of discomfort experienced in the days after the surgery vary greatly from patient to patient and will depend on the extent of work done. Dr. Salzhauer can prescribe pain medication to alleviate any potential discomfort.

The Consult

Dr. Salzhauer considers the initial consult one of the most important parts of the face lift process. This is the time when Dr. Salzhauer will address any concerns and answer any questions you have about the surgery. Among other things, you will discuss:

  • Potential risk factors of face lift surgery
  • Potential benefits of face lift surgery
  • What you hope to gain from the surgery
  • The limitations of the surgery respective to your particular case
  • he length of your recovery period
  • Other treatments or surgical techniques that you might benefit from

If you have questions about face lift surgery, contact our office (serving Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and beyond). Skilled face lift surgeon Michael Salzhauer, MD, can address any of your concerns and ensure that you are fully informed about your treatment before you choose to follow through with the procedure.

Face Lift Alternative: Featherlift®

Featherlift® is a minimally invasive procedure that is designed to lift sagging skin and facial tissue and reduce early signs of aging.

How Does Featherlift® Work?

During a Featherlift® procedure, Dr. Salzhauer inserts special threads beneath the skin and loops them around the face and neck to lift sagging skin. Each thread has tiny barbs that help to gently lift and hold skin and tissue in place. Once the desired effect has been achieved, the sterile threads are secured and left beneath the skin.

Since only a small needle and no knives or scalpels are involved, the treatment requires only mild, local anesthesia. It generally takes less than an hour to complete and involves little or no downtime.

Featherlift® can be used to raise the brow, lift sagging neck tissue, reduce the appearance of jowls, and even lift the soft tissue of the face.

For more information about Featherlift® or face lift surgery, contact our Miami and Ft. Lauderdale -area practice today.

Forehead/Browlift

A forehead lift, also known as browlift, is a procedure used to tighten and rejuvenate the forehead area. It is extremely effective at improving horizontal lines, furrows, drooping brows, and other signs of aging. When performing browlift, Dr. Salzhauer first makes an incision along the top of the forehead, just behind the hairline. He then carefully removes muscle and tissue to give the skin a smoother, more youthful appearance. In some cases, Dr. Salzhauer can perform endoscopic browlift surgery. This method, which involves the use of a small camera to guide the surgery, results in smaller scars than traditional browlift surgery. If you're considering browlift surgery, arrange a consultation at Dr. Salzhauer's Bal Harbour practice today.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) is one of the most popular procedures in facial plastic surgery. Nose reshaping can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes - to correct birth defects or breathing problems. The result can be subtle or dramatic depending on the patient's desired effect.

Rhinoplasty is considered by many to be the most complex operation in cosmetic surgery. Nasal anatomy and facial structure vary from person to person, and rhinoplasty must be individualized for each patient who visits our Miami practice. Through rhinoplasty, plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer, MD, will enhance your nose so that it matches your facial structure and appears natural.

Through rhinoplasty, Miami -based Dr. Salzhauer helps people attain more aesthetically pleasing noses.

Undergoing Rhinoplasty

At our Miami practice, rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia, allowing you to sleep through the procedure. It typically takes about one to two hours to complete the surgery, though complicated cases can take longer. Following surgery, Dr. Salzhauer will apply a splint to your nose to help it maintain its new shape.

Once home, you can take pain medication to alleviate any discomfort and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. You should be out of bed after one to two days and able to return to most normal activities after about one to two weeks.

Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty

Dr. Salzhauer can perform either open or closed rhinoplasty at his Miami practice, depending on your unique surgical needs and the complexity of your case. In open rhinoplasty, surgery is performed though an incision made across the strip of tissue separating the nostrils. In closed rhinoplasty, all surgery is performed from an incision within the nose, so scars are hidden. Both methods lead to beautiful, natural looking results.

Rhinoplasty Revision Surgery

Dr. Salzhauer also frequently performs revision rhinoplasty in Miami on patients who have undergone nose surgery elsewhere. During your initial rhinoplasty consultation, he will find out why you are unhappy with your nose and will develop a plan for surgery.

Eye Rejuvenation (Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty is designed to reduce puffiness around the eyes, eliminate bags under the eyes, and create smoother facial contours. At our practice serving Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and beyond, eyelid surgery can be used to smooth the skin and reduce fine lines above the eyes and/or below the eyes, and can also add an upper eyelid crease to patients of Asian descent.

Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery can provide an ideal solution for some patients who are unhappy with puffy eyes and bags under the eyes caused by excess skin or fatty tissue. In general, the best candidates for this procedure are middle-aged men and women who are in good health and have realistic expectations about what can be accomplished through surgery. In some cases, younger patients may also be good candidates for blepharoplasty.

Eyelid surgery can also be performed on Asian patients who lack an eyelid crease. Any patient who desires a fold to the area above the eyelashes is a good candidate for Asian double eyelid surgery.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure

When performing blepharoplasty, Dr. Salzhauer will make several small incisions disguised in the natural creases of the eyelids. From these small openings, he can trim away excess skin and remove fatty tissue to smooth and tighten the area. In some cases where very little excess skin needs to be removed, it may be possible for Dr. Salzhauer to perform transconjunctival blepharoplasty, a procedure in which the only incision made is inside the lower eyelid.

The method of eyelid surgery will vary according to the specific needs of the patient, as will the recovery time. Blepharoplasty is often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as face lift or rhinoplasty. As with any cosmetic surgery, detailed information about the procedure as it relates to your specific needs will be discussed at length during the initial blepharoplasty consultation at our Miami practice serving Ft. Lauderdale and other areas. For more information about eyelid surgery, contact our office today.

Asian Double Eyelid Surgery

When creating an eyelid crease for Asian patients, Dr. Salzhauer removes excess tissue through incisions on the eyelids. He then creates a natural skin fold and closes the incisions with fine sutures. Following surgery, scars are completely hidden by the eyelid crease. Contact us to learn more about undergoing double eyelid surgery at our Miami practice.

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a relatively simple procedure designed to correct the appearance of large or protruding ears. It involves repositioning the ears closer to the head, and sometimes removing some of the cartilage. Candidates for Otoplasty Doctors often recommend that children with excessively large or protruding ears undergo otoplasty before enrolling in primary school to avoid potential teasing and self-esteem problems. However, otoplasty can be performed safely and effectively on patients of any age. Contact our Miami practice, serving Ft. Lauderdale and beyond, for more information about facial plastic surgery of the ears.

Facial Implants

Facial implants, most commonly used in the cheekbones, jaw, and chin, are made of hard, biocompatible material. They are designed to improve facial contour and bone structure when implanted under the skin.

Common Uses of Facial Implants

Facial implants can be used to:

  • improve sagging or sunken cheekbones
  • strengthen a weak jawline
  • correct a weak or receding chin
  • and improve and balance facial proportions.

During your initial consultation about facial implants, plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer will discuss with you in great detail what you hope to achieve from facial implant surgery and what he can safely accomplish. Dr. Salzhauer will show you the facial implants he uses and give you an idea of how you will look after the procedure. The site of the incision, the size and shape of the facial implant, and downtime after surgery all vary from patient to patient.

Lip Augmentation or Lip Plumping

There are a number of products that can make your lips look bigger.

Miami is a city that's all about style and glamour. In the heart of it all is Bal Harbour, the world capital of fashion and indulgence. Nothing adds to a women's beauty quite like full, luscious, youthful looking lips. That's why so many celebrities and lay-people from around the world turn to Dr. Salzhauer to achieve the perfect "lip look" they desire. Whether it is just a subtle accent along the lip edges or a complete lip makeover, Dr. Salzhauer knows just what it takes to make you look fabulous.

Here's how he does it:

Temporary Lip Injectables

Most of the lip plumping products are temporary. The ones that we use the most commonly are called Restylane and Juvederm. They last anywhere from 8 months to one year. They're very safe: they generally don't cause lumps and bumps, they're very smooth, and they look great. The only problem is that they don't last forever.

Permanent Lip Injectables

There are other products that last longer. Silicone, which lasts forever, can be injected into the lips. However, permanent products that are injected tend to cause more problems in the long run because your body creates a little scar tissue around it, and it can create a little bump or a little lump. It can be visible, it can be painful, and it can be very annoying. And the problem is once you put something permanent into your lips, it can only be removed surgically. There's no injection that can get rid of it.

Plus, injecting silicone is not FDA approved for aesthetic purposes. They do it in Europe, but again we see a lot of Europeans and South Americans that do come into our practice with injected silicone that needs to be surgically removed. And it can be very messy.

Permanent Lip Implants (FulFill ô Implant)

However, there is a new product that has just been approved called the "FulFill lip implant. It's like a little saline breast implant for your lips. It's basically a tiny lip-shaped implant that is inserted through a hidden incision. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. The implant fills up with saline, so you can adjust it to the volume you desire. The lips can actually be tailored with the patient awake, looking in a mirror to give you the exact augmentation that you want.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery operations performed in the United States today. All of Dr. Salzhauer's efforts are directed toward helping you achieve your goals.

At our practice serving Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, breast augmentation surgery is performed for a number of reasons:

  • To enhance the body contour of a woman who feels that her breast size is too small
  • To correct a loss in breast volume after pregnancy
  • To balance breast size, when there exists a significant difference between the two breasts
  • As a reconstructive technique for various conditions
  • For various other medical or cosmetic reasons

If you live near Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and are interested in breast implants, arrange a consultation at our Bal Harbour plastic surgery practice today.

The Procedure

The shape and size of the breasts prior to breast augmentation surgery will influence both the recommended treatment and the final results. Breast enlargement is accomplished by inserting breast implants either behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscles. The incisions are made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible and can be placed:

  • Around the nipple
  • Underneath the breast
  • Underneath the arm
  • Through the belly button

At our Miami and Ft. Lauderdale - area practice, the method of inserting and positioning breast implants will depend on your preferences, your anatomy, and Dr. Salzhauer's recommendation.

Breast enhancement is not reserved only for women who have had children. However, after pregnancy, many women are upset by changes in their breast size and shape. Breast implants can quickly change the way a woman feels about herself. Breast augmentation is one of the most common operations that patients say improves their self-confidence and outward appearance.

Why Visit Dr. Salzhauer for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a relatively simple surgery, but one with a very small margin of error. If you are considering breast augmentation, choosing a surgeon whom you trust and whose work you admire is of the highest importance.

Dr. Salzhauer has many satisfied patients and enjoys a reputation as a talented surgeon serving Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. If you are considering breast implants, schedule a breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Salzhauer. Breast Lift

Breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, is one of the most popular breast enhancement procedures we offer in our Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area practice. Breast lift is designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts and breasts that have lost volume and elasticity following pregnancy or weight loss. It can also reduce the size of the areola in cases where it has been stretched or enlarged. Mastopexy can raise the nipples to an aesthetically pleasing height.

The Surgery

The surgical technique varies from surgeon to surgeon and patient to patient. At our Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area practice, breast lift takes ninety minutes to three hours to complete under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision around the areola and down the middle of the breast underneath the nipple. From this incision, tissue and/or skin is removed so that the breast can be raised to its new position. In some cases, breast implants are used in conjunction with breast lift surgery to create the desired effect.

Following breast lift surgery at our Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area practice, most patients will have a small scar that extends vertically from the bottom center of the nipple underneath the breast.

Because each patient seeking mastopexy surgery is different, there are many different techniques for performing the procedure. If you are considering breast lift surgery, schedule a breast enhancement consultation at Dr. Salzhauer's Miami practice - serving Ft. Lauderdale and beyond. He can discuss your individual case and decide what surgical technique is right for you.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is the process of rebuilding a breast or breasts that have been partially or completely removed after a mastectomy. In general, there are three types of breast reconstruction - simple implant augmentation; augmentation with a tissue expander; and autologous tissue grafts, which are used to rebuild the breast with tissue from another part of the body.

Tissue Expansion

Depending on the amount of breast tissue removed, a tissue expander may need to be implanted prior to traditional breast augmentation surgery. A tissue expander is a deflated silicone balloon that is implanted under the chest where the implant will go. After it is implanted and the skin is allowed to heal, the expander is slowly inflated through a series of small injections. Once the expander has stretched the tissue, it can be replaced with a permanent implant.

Autologous Tissue or Flap Reconstructions

Another option for breast reconstruction is autologous tissue reconstruction, which involves rebuilding the breast with a graft of tissue taken from another part of the patient's body.

Breast reconstruction surgery is different for each patient. If you have had or will have a mastectomy and hope to rebuild the breast tissue lost during the surgery, contact Dr. Salzhauer. Dr. Salzhauer has extensive experience performing breast reconstruction surgery on breast cancer patients and he can help you determine the best course of treatment.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is designed to help alleviate physical and mental discomfort associated with excessively large breasts. Disproportionately large breasts can lead to neck and back pain, cause embarrassment, and limit physical activity. Generally, patients who undergo breast reduction at our Miami and Ft. Lauderdale practice are extremely satisfied with the results of this breast enhancement procedure.

The Procedure

Breast reduction methods vary according to the needs of each patient. In general, the surgeon makes an anchor shaped incision around the nipple and underneath the breast, and then removes excess skin and tissue to reduce breast size. Once the necessary skin, fat, and breast tissue is removed, the incision can be closed. The procedure generally results in a small vertical scar underneath the breast.

Breast reduction encompasses a few different techniques, and Dr. Salzhauer can help determine the best one for you during your initial breast enhancement consultation at our practice - serving Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and surrounding areas.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Rapid weight changes, pregnancy, weakened abdominal muscles, and a loss of skin elasticity around the lower abdomen can create a sagging and protruding stomach that can't be improved with diet or exercise. For patients looking to eliminate excess skin and an abdominal bulge, our Miami practice offers abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck.

Undergoing Tummy Tuck Surgery

Tummy tuck surgery at our Miami practice - serving Ft. Lauderdale and other areas - is usually performed under general anesthesia. During abdominoplasty, Dr. Salzhauer makes an incision across the lower abdomen from hip to hip. He is careful to place the incision so that scars will be hidden below the underwear line. The length of the incisions depends on the extent of the surgery and varies from patient to patient.

After making the incision, Dr. Salzhauer will remove excess skin and tissue, tighten weakened abdominal muscles, and often use liposuction to remove fat. Once the lower abdomen has been sufficiently tightened and flattened, the incision will be closed.

Abdominoplasty after Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery has proven to be very successful at helping obese patients lose large amounts of weight. Though drastic weight loss can dramatically improve health and self esteem, it can also leave patients with large amounts of loose skin, especially in the abdominal region.

To combat the problem of excess skin, Dr. Salzhauer can perform abdominoplasty on patients after they have lost weight through gastric bypass surgery. The tummy tuck process is the same as that described in the section above: excess skin and tissue are removed and abdominal muscles are tightened. Undergoing abdominoplasty following gastric bypass surgery helps patients at our Miami practice feel more satisfied with their weight loss and more comfortable with their bodies.

Recovery Period following Tummy Tuck Surgery

Abdominoplasty varies greatly from patient to patient in terms of the size of incisions and the amount of tissue removed. The recovery period depends on the extent of the surgery. Dr. Salzhauer will discuss the details of your particular situation during your initial tummy tuck consultation at his Miami office.

If you would like to eliminate loose skin and a sagging midsection through tummy tuck surgery, contact our practice near Miami and Ft. Lauderdale and schedule an abdominoplasty consultation.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a very popular procedure that is regarded as both effective and safe. The treatment is designed to eliminate stubborn fatty deposits via a suction tool that removes fat cells in the problem areas. Liposuction at our Miami practice (serving Ft. Lauderdale and beyond) is ideal for eliminating genetically predisposed areas of fatty tissue.

Candidates for Liposuction

The best candidates for liposuction at our Miami practice are patients with a healthy diet and consistent exercise regimen who have localized areas of stubborn fatty deposits.

The Procedure

After delivering a local or general anesthetic, the surgeon makes several small incisions near the problem areas on the body. The incisions are generally small enough that scarring isn't a problem. The surgeon then places a thin, round suctioning device called a cannula through the incision to remove fat cells.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is a surgical technique that involves the injection of a large amount of fluid into targeted areas of fatty tissue prior to the removal of fat cells. The injections consist of a solution made from a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that helps numb the area and epinephrine is a solution that constricts capillaries and helps to reduce blood loss during the liposuction procedure. The tumescent method may produce less post-operative discomfort than traditional liposuction.

Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area residents and visitors interested in tumescent liposuction can contact our practice to schedule a consultation.

Recovery

Recovery times for liposuction can vary, depending on the location and extent of the fat removal and the liposuction method used. Dr. Salzhauer will discuss recovery in great detail during the initial surgical consultation.

If you live near or plan to visit Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and are interested in liposuction, contact Bal Harbour Plastic Surgery. We would be happy to show you more liposuction before and after pictures or answer any questions you might have.

Body Contouring Procedures

Pregnancy, weight loss, and the unfortunate effects of gravity can lead some people to develop areas of loose, hanging skin on their bodies. Unfortunately, this excess skin will not disappear on its own, even when a patient commits to eating healthy and exercising. For patients who wish to eliminate loose skin, Miami plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer, MD, offers various body contouring options including arm lift, thigh lift, and post-bariatric body sculpting.

Upper Arm Lift

Upper arm lift surgery is designed to correct sagging skin underneath the arms. To begin the procedure, the plastic surgeon at our Miami practice makes an incision in the arm, through which he removes excess tissue and tightens muscles. Once the area has been recontoured, the incisions are closed and the recovery period begins.

Thigh and Buttock Lift

A thigh lift reduces loose skin in the thigh area to give an overall tighter appearance to the inner thigh. For some patients, the plastic surgeon at our Miami practice will also lift the buttock area at the same time the thighs are being lifted.

Thigh and buttock lift are ideal for patients who are in relatively good shape with excess skin and fat in the thigh area. These procedures are often performed on patients who have lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise or bariatric surgery.

Post-Bariatric Body Sculpting

Watching your weight drop following bariatric surgery can be an extremely rewarding experience. However, as the pounds come off, excess skin is usually left behind, often causing patients to feel self conscious about their new bodies.

If you have lost a large amount of weight through bariatric surgery, our skilled plastic surgeon can help you complete your transformation by making your new, healthier body appear slimmer and more toned. He may recommend a combination of procedures including arm lift, thigh lift, buttock lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction to achieve the best results possible.

For more information about body sculpting options, set up an appointment with plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer, MD, at our Miami practice.

BOTOX® and Injectable Fillers

BOTOX® Cosmetic

At our Miami practice, serving Ft. Lauderdale and beyond, BOTOX® Cosmetic has become an extremely popular anti-aging solution in the last few years because of its safety, effectiveness, and convenience. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections paralyze the facial muscles that create and exacerbate frown lines and wrinkles. A series of small injections, which can be administered in less than an hour, can paralyze facial muscles and smooth skin for up to four months.

One of the benefits of the temporary nature of BOTOX® Cosmetic is that if you are unhappy with the results, you can alter or discontinue the treatment at our Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area practice as soon as the first BOTOX® injections wear off.

Injectable Fillers

In addition to BOTOX® Cosmetic, our Miami practice also offers various injectable fillers - compounds that are injected into the skin to add fullness, augment the lips, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Fillers offered include:

  • Collagen Injections
  • Fat Injections
  • Restylane®
  • Hylaform®
  • Sculptra®
  • Radiesseô

The injectable fillers we offer have proven to be safe and effective, and many are derived from materials that occur naturally in the human body. To learn which filler might be right for you, set up a consultation at Bal Harbour Plastic Surgery.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure used to refresh facial skin and reduce or eliminate the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, and age spots. When performing microdermabrasion at our Miami practice, we use a small device to spray tiny crystals across the face. The crystals polish facial skin, removing dead skin cells and stimulating the production of new cells and collagen. Each microdermabrasion treatment takes between 30 minutes and an hour to complete. We recommend that you return to our practice for repeat treatments in order to attain the best possible results.
