What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size and enhance the shape of a woman's breasts. The indications for the procedure are women who feel their breasts are too small and are looking to improve their figure, women who have lost breast volume and shape as a result of pregnancy, aging or weight loss, and women who have a significant difference in the size of their breasts and want them equalized.

The breast augmentation procedure involves the surgical placement of an implant behind the breast or behind the muscular layer. Different types of implants can be used, depending on circumstances. Dr. Nosti takes special care to evaluate each patient, and decides with the patient's input, which surgery is the best technique, the best type and best shape of the implants, etc. He will also go through numerous pre and post operative photographs to give the patient an idea of the results in different cases.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Women with very large, sagging breasts tend to have neck, back and shoulder pain. Patients find that breast reduction surgery greatly benefits their life and is one of the most satisfying procedures. Patients have not only relief of their symptoms, but also the ability to exercise better and wear better-fitting clothes.

Patients who are good candidates for a reduction procedure have heavy, possibly sagging breasts, associated with neck, back or shoulder pain, shoulder notching, furrowing from bra straps, irritation or chronic rashes developing beneath the breasts, and difficulty with exercise and physical activity due to the size of the breasts.

The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia and usually takes two to four hours to complete. One can expect a recovery period of approximately two weeks.

What Is Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

As time passes, pregnancy, nursing, excessive weight loss and gravity have adverse effects on women's breasts, causing them to lose their elasticity, firmness and shape. This creates a sagging appearance. A mastopexy, or breast lift, is the procedure that corrects this condition, using a combination of removing excess skin and, at times, inserting small implants to give the breasts a natural size and shape.

Dr. Nosti will listen to your concerns about your particular case, he will do an examination and will offer you the best procedure for your particular situation.

What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction has become one of the most rewarding surgical procedures performed today. Each year, many women become afflicted with breast cancer. Unfortunately for some, this disease leads to the removal of one or both breasts. However, advancements in breast reconstruction have allowed doctors to actually recreate a breast that is almost identical in look and feel of a natural breast.

This is accomplished through the use of breast implants and skin expansion or flap reconstruction techniques. Doctors can even perform breast reconstruction immediately after the breast removal, or mastectomy. This allows the woman to awaken from surgery and not see herself missing a breast. Not only can breast reconstruction help improve appearance; it has helped many women improve their quality of life and regain a sense of femininity. However, this is a major surgical procedure, and there is a lot of information one needs to know before undergoing breast reconstruction.

That is why it is important for a patient to discuss her options with not only her plastic surgeon, but also her breast surgeon.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of the male breasts, a condition that is common and affects a good percentage of the male population. The majority of the cases have no known causes or pathology, while in some cases, this may be related to the use of drugs or a medical condition.

The best candidates for the procedure are healthy, emotionally stable men or boys, who have firm, elastic skin that will reshape after the mastopexy. The procedure is done as an outpatient and is done with general anesthetic or sedation, depending on the extensiveness of the procedure.

What Is Liposuction?

Exercise and diet can help make you healthy, as well as help you look lean and muscular. For some individuals, however, it does not always remove those stubborn localized fat deposits (LFDs).

Individual fat distribution and body shape is genetically determined. What this means is that, often, no amount of diet and exercise will remove those stubborn LFDs.

Liposuction is a procedure that can remove fat cells, thus sculpting the body and doing what diet and exercise alone cannot do. Liposuction is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States today. However, although liposuction is designed to remove fat, it does not replace or serve as a substitute for a diet regimen and exercise.

The best candidates for liposuction are men and women of normal weight or close to normal weight who mainly want to improve their body shape and contour, people with LFDs in "trouble areas" where exercise and diet seem not to have any effect, and people with good elasticity in their skin, so that when the fat is removed, they will achieve a smooth appearance.

The areas where liposuction can have the greatest effect are the abdomen, waist area, back, chin, neck, hips and saddlebags, buttocks, thighs, ankles, calves and inner knees.

What Is Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed from the lower abdomen and the muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened. This procedure can drastically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and reduce the waistline. This procedure is particularly helpful for women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched the abdomen so far that it does not return to its normal shape. Tummy tucks are also helpful for those who have lost a significant amount of weight, but still possess loose, sagging skin. At times, tummy tucks are performed in conjunction with liposuction. In some cases, where only a limited fat deposit in the lower abdomen is deforming its contour, a liposuction procedure will take care of this without a large incision.

What Is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can enhance the beauty of your eyes and improve self confidence, by removing the appearance of droopy or sagging eyelids. As people age, the eyelid stretches, muscles weaken and fat accumulates around the eyes, causing "bags" or excess skin to become prominent. Considering the time involving the surgery and relatively short post operative recovery, this gives one of the best rewards in cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Nosti will evaluate the anatomy and appearance of your eyelids and will give you his opinion on which of the procedures needs to be used and whether the upper and lower lids need to be treated.

What Is Facial Rejuvenation by Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)?

Face lift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure designed to smooth the loose skin of the face and neck and reduce the most apparent signs of aging in the facial area, resulting in a fresher, more relaxed and youthful appearance.

The procedure involves reducing the creases from the cheeks, the slacking jaw line and sagging jowls and fat deposits around the neck by removing excess fat and tightening underlying muscles, then re-draping the skin of the face and neck. At times, a more limited procedure, involving the lower third of the face and neck will give you the desired results with a lesser procedure and greater benefit.

Dr. Nosti will evaluate the anatomy and the areas you desire corrected and will be able to give you his best opinion on which of the procedures is beneficial in your particular case.

What Is Endoscopic Forehead / Brow Lift?

A forehead lift or brow lift is designed to re-position sagging eyebrows that can cause a person to look tired, sad or angry. Endoscopic forehead lift or brow lift is the most common endoscopic procedure used by cosmetic surgeons. With this method, two or more small incisions are made at or behind the hairline and a small endoscope is used. The eyebrows are then re-positioned to a higher level, resulting in a more natural, relaxed appearance.

What Is Skin Resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing is a procedure that employs a carbon dioxide laser or erbium laser to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin. This is often used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth and eyes, but it is also effective in treating age spots or areas of uneven pigmentation.

Good candidates for the procedure are people with wrinkles or sun-damaged facial skin, brown spots or blotchy skin coloring, fine wrinkles on the upper lids or crow's feet.

These treatments are often used in conjunction with other procedures such as face lift or eye lift surgery.

What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a procedure that is designed to pin back the ears closer to the head or reduce their size. This results in more natural looking ears. This procedure can be performed on the very young as well as older individuals. The otoplasty procedure varies with every patient and their degree of ear deformity. During the operation, an incision is made behind the ear to hide the marks of surgical intervention. Sutures are strategically placed to shape the cartilage in normal folds, which are missing pre-operatively. The skin is re-draped, any excess skin removed, and the incision behind the ear is closed. To reduce the swelling or collection of fluid beneath the skin, a dressing is placed on the head to put gentle pressure on the ears and maintain their position.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Surgery on the nose is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. There are patients who, for different reasons, are unhappy with some areas of their nasal anatomy as well as patients who have had an alteration to their nose as a result of injury. Rhinoplasty offers a solution to these individuals.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking for an improvement in the way they look and not searching for perfection. This surgery can reduce or increase the overall size of one's nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow or widen the nostrils. The best candidates are ones who wish to have a limited change, have a good structural support and skin that will drape well over the changed, supporting frame.

This surgery is done as an outpatient, under general anesthesia.

What Are Collagen and Fat Injections?

Collagen and fat injections can help restore youthfulness to one's appearance without the incisions and the downtime. This procedure is especially helpful in adding fullness to the lips and cheeks. When injected, the filler plumps up the creased and sunken areas of the face.

What Are Chemical Peel and Dermabrasion?

Chemical peel/dermabrasions are procedures that will abrade or eliminate the superficial layers of skin and thus, will produce a regeneration of dermico-efder and corneal layer that will make the skin plumper and less wrinkled. This will also help with dyschromias and little changes in the pigmentation of the skin. This is done as an outpatient procedure. It will take two to three weeks, depending on the depth of the peel and the desired results, to complete the healing process.

Dr. Nosti will evaluate your situation and recommend what he thinks is the best option for you.

What Are Botox® Injections?

Botox® is a form of botulism toxin that, when injected, temporarily paralyzes the muscles that cause wrinkles. This treatment reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases and crow's feet near the eyes. Botox® injections take only a few minutes to an hour to be performed, depending on the size of the treatment area. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after treatment. Generally, the effects of Botox® injections should last three to six months and further treatment may be advised.
