Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to enlarge breast size. This may be desired to enhance body contour when a woman, who for personal reasons, feels that her breast size is too small. It may be done to correct volume loss after pregnancy or due to aging. It may be desired to balance breast size when a significant breast asymmetry exists.

Breast enlargement is accomplished by inserting an artificial implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle through an inconspicuous incision, located most commonly along the fold of the breast. At present, saline-filled implants are generally used. Silicone gel-filled implants can be used with restrictions only in select individuals.

Augmentation procedures are usually performed on an outpatient basis. They are typically done under general anesthesia and take about 1-1 ? hours of surgical time. Post-operatively, one can expect swelling and soreness for about 10 days. Patients may resume mild-moderate activity within 2 weeks, and regular activity within 4 weeks.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure performed to decrease breast size. Women with large breasts may experience a variety of problems due to the weight and size of their breasts, including back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, shoulder indentations, skin irritation, and neurologic symptoms in their hands and fingers. Breast reduction is usually performed in efforts to alleviate or minimize these symptoms. Some insurance plans do provide coverage for breast reduction procedures, if medical necessity criteria are met.

Occasionally, breast reduction may be performed simply to enhance the appearance of the breasts in individuals who do not experience the above noted symptoms. In such situations, the procedure if generally not covered by medical insurance.

Breast reduction procedures are performed on a 23-hour observation basis. Hence patients will stay at the hospital overnight following their surgery. They are done under general anesthesia. Breast reductions require about 3-4 hours of surgical time. Post-operatively, patients will be sore and swollen. Mild activity may be resumed at 2 weeks and regular activity at 4 weeks.

Breast Lift

Breast lift (Mastopexy) is a surgical procedure performed to elevate and reshape sagging breasts. Factors, such as pregnancy, nursing, aging, and gravity, for example, can enable breasts to lose their shape. This operation can also reduce the size of the areola.

Breast implants can be placed at the time of a breast lift procedure, if one also desires an enlargement in breast size. Upper breast fullness can better be maintained with concomitant implant placement.

Breast lift procedures are usually performed on an outpatient basis. They are done under general anesthesia and take typically 1 ?-3 hours of surgical time. Post-operatively, one can expect swelling and soreness for about 10 days. Patients may resume mild-moderate activity within 2 weeks and regular activity within 4 weeks.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction procedures are surgical procedures performed to build a breast-shaped mound subsequent to breast loss from cancer, for example. The goal of this surgery is to build a breast mound that most closely resembles the other breast in shape and size and texture or to reconstruct two breast mounds that are symmetrical to each other. Patients often desire such reconstruction to personally feel more whole, subsequent to loss of their breast(s). Others may desire reconstruction to enable increased freedom regarding clothing selections, subsequent to breast loss.
Multiple reconstructive techniques are available. Various muscle flaps (TRAM flaps or latissimus flaps) can be used, as can both saline and silicone gel filled implants. Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately following mastectomy or in a delayed fashion. The shape and size of ones' breasts prior to surgery, body habitus, smoking history, medical condition, previous surgeries, radiation history, and need for chemotherapy will all influence an individual's recommended reconstructive options.

Breast reconstruction is typically performed as in-patient surgery. Surgery may last from 1 ? - 5 hours depending on the reconstructive method used and the number of breasts that are being reconstructed. Hence, recovery will vary accordingly.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure performed to improve body contours by removing unwanted fatty tissue from specific areas of the body. This procedure can be done on most areas of the body, including but not limited to the abdomen, flank, hips, buttocks, and thighs. This is not a method of weight reduction, but a method of removing localized fatty deposits. Liposuction may be performed in conjunction with other body contouring procedures, such as abdominoplasties and breast reductions.

Liposuction is performed by inserting a long, hollow cannula through short (1/4 - ? inch), inconspicuous incisions(s) and then moving the cannula back and forth through the area of fatty deposit. Fluid, containing dilute local anesthetic and epinephrine, is infiltrated into the fatty tissue prior to liposuction. This technique reduces post-operative bleeding, bruising and discomfort. Liposuction does not address issues related to excess skin or muscle laxity.

Liposuction procedures take about 1-3 hours depending on the number of treated areas. Such surgery may be done as an outpatient or may require an overnight stay. Post-operatively compression garments will need to be worn by the patient for 1-2 months.

Abdominoplasty

Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to enhance abdominal contours. Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed and the underlying abdominal muscles are tightened. Abdominoplasty is not a treatment for obesity. Individuals who intend to lose weight should postpone body contouring procedures until they have met their weight loss goals.

The scars are positioned along the lower abdomen and may be short (mini-abdominoplasty) or long (full abdominoplassty). In a full abdominoplasty, the scar extends from hip to hip, with an additional scar around the umbilicus.

Abdominoplasty surgery takes about 2-4 hours. Patients stay in the hospital for 1-2 nights following surgery. Recovery takes about 4 weeks. One can expect soreness, swelling and numbness along the surgical site.

Upper Arm Reduction

Upper arm reduction (Brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to remove the redundant upper arm tissue, creating a more aesthetic upper arm silhouette. Factors such as weight change, aging, skin tone, exercise and gravity all contribute to produce changes in the appearance of a woman's arms. While improved upper arm silhouettes are achievable, such reshaping does leave permanent, noticeable scars on the arms.

Upper arm reductions usually take about 3 hours to complete. Such procedures are typically done as an outpatient. Post-operatively patients can expect swelling and discomfort in the upper extremities for 2 to 4 weeks. Moderate activity can be resumed by 2 weeks and regular activity by 4 weeks.

Skin Care

Healthy, natural and youthful looking skin is desirable by most patients. The natural aging process, sun exposure and smoking all contribute to cause cellular damage of the skin which affects its external appearance. Such damage may result in skin that appears dull, pigmented, has uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles.

The Dermesse system is a multi-step skin care system that helps restore more healthy and youthful looking skin. It consists of a cleanser, toner, skin lightener, exfoliator, balancer and sunscreen. These products are used in conjunction with retinoic acid. The program is a physician controlled system and can be regulated to accommodate individual lifestyles.
