What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a common cosmetic procedure that is used to increase the fullness and projection of a woman’s breasts through implants thereby improving the balance in a women’s figure, and enhancing her self-image and self-confidence.

Breast augmentation is used to:

  • Enlarge a naturally small breast
  • Restore lost breast volume due to pregnancy or weight loss
  • Achieve better symmetry if breasts are disproportionate in size or shape
While breast augmentation will increase the fullness of breasts, it does not correct sagging breasts. If a women wishes to improve the position or shape of her breasts, a breast lift can be performed in conjunction with a breast augmentation.

How is a Breast Augmentation procedure done?

Breast augmentation is performed using implants made of medical grade, biocompatible, textured or smooth silicone shells filled with a sterile saline solution. The saline poses no health hazard and can be safely absorbed by the body if there is a leak or rupture.

The breast implants are filled at the time of the surgery through a self-sealing valve. You and your surgeon will determine the best implant type, size, and placement for your body type.

To perform the breast augmentation, the surgeon and patient can choose from several incisions, which are based on implant type and size, and a patient’s anatomy. Several common incision placements are near the crease under the breast, in the underarm area, and near the edge of the areola. Through the incisions, a pocket is created either behind the breast tissue or beneath the pectoral muscle where the implant is placed.

The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible.

What is an Abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty, which is more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that is used to correct a protruding or loose, sagging abdomen. When a flat and toned abdomen cannot be obtained through exercise and weight control, a tummy tuck may be appropriate. A tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen, and, if needed, can improve weakened or separated muscles.

How is an Abdominoplasty done?

Every tummy tuck will be individualized to the patient’s condition, which may include:

  • Excess localized fat
  • Loose and sagging skin
  • Weakened or separated abdominal muscles due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
The surgeon will make a horizontal incision above the pubic hairline to help conceal the scar when wearing clothes. The size and position of the incision will vary depending on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. Through this incision, the surgeon will then remove the tissue, fat or skin, or repair the muscles.

Liposuction may also be used in conjunction with the tummy tuck to remove localized fat deposits and recontour the body.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a common cosmetic procedure that is used to change the contours of your body. This procedure is intended for people who are bothered by excess fat deposits located anywhere on their body that do not respond to diet and exercise. Most patients are near normal weight and desire a permanent contour change. Commonly involved areas are the anterior part of the neck (under the chin), upper arms and armpits, male chest/breasts, trunk, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles. Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty or UAL is a common variation to the procedure that may be used. With UAL, ultrasonic energy is used to liquefy excess fat prior to surgical suctioning.

Liposuction is used to:

  • Make a permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of the treated areas.
  • Make a more flattering figure or physique, in or out of clothing
This procedure is done on an outpatient basis and is usually performed under general anesthesia for safety and comfort.

How is Liposuction done?

Liposuction involves small suction tubes (cannulas) inserted through very short incisions placed in inconspicuous locations near the fat deposits. Excess fat is removed through the cannulas.

The patient goes home with a compression garment (or tape) covering the treated areas. Compression is advised for about a month as it helps reduce swelling and helps you achieve the final result more quickly. Once pain and soreness decrease, it is frequently more comfortable to wear lycra or spandex exercise pants.

Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2-4 weeks. The final result takes shape over 2-3 months.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic procedure to reduce the signs of facial aging. This includes the loss of skin elasticity and firmness, sagging tissues and wrinkles, and the loss of muscle tone of the face and neck. Sagging in the midface can create a deep crease below the lower eyelid (called a tear trough) and between the nose and mouth (nasolabial fold) that may make you appear tired and sad. Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can make even a person of normal weight appear to have a “double chin.” The surgery affects the side of the face and neck. It is generally “custom tailored” to the individual’s needs. Sometimes liposuction is also performed in conjunction with a facelift to obtain the best overall result. A facelift is intended to give the patient a more rested and youthful contour to the face and neck. Facelifts range in size from “mini” to “standard” depending on location and the extent of skin laxity. A traditional facelift restores the midface, jowls, and neck, allowing excess skin to be removed.

What is a Blepharoplasty?

A blepharoplasty, which is sometimes referred to as cosmetic eyelid surgery, is a procedure that is used to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Eyelid surgery is used to treat:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Droopiness of the lower eyelids
  • Loose, sagging, or excess skin that hides the contour of the upper eyelid or can impair vision
  • Excess skin or wrinkles of the lower eyelid
  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness
These conditions can appear due to heredity or as part of the aging process. Regardless of the cause, eyelid surgery can revive the area surrounding the eye giving a more rested and alert appearance.

How is a Blepharoplasty done?

Like all cosmetic procedures, every eyelid surgery requires an individualized approach. Your surgeon will evaluate your condition to determine the best approach for your surgery. Often a lowered brow may be a contributing factor and may influence the surgical plan for rejuvenation.

In general, droopy upper eyelids can be corrected using an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This incision then allows the surgeon to reposition fat deposits and remove excess skin.

Incisions used in eyelid surgery are well concealed by the natural structures of the eyelid region.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing, also called a laser peel, is a procedure that is used to create smoother, more even-toned skin, correct areas of uneven pigmentation, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Men and women of any age can benefit from this procedure. Laser skin resurfacing can correct a variety of conditions, including:

  • Fine lines (especially around the eyes)
  • Acne scars
  • Vertical lines around the mouth
  • Facial scars
  • Uneven pigmentation/age spots
  • Sun damaged skin

How is Laser Skin Resurfacing done?

Laser skin resurfacing is performed by focusing a beam of laser energy on the damaged skin, which vaporizes the upper layers of skin. The activated laser is passed back and forth over the skin with careful precision until the surgeon reaches the safest level that will make the wrinkle or scar less visible. If the skin imperfections are deep, your doctor may recommend performing the procedure in two or more stages.

As the skin heals, new cells form, creating a smoother and tighter looking skin surface.
